This hike on the Western edge of New Hampshire leads to a great overlook over the town of Brattleboro, Vermont, but the trail itself isn’t well-marked. The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests has kindly provided the map below.

Trailhead Directions: 1.5 hours Take I-91 North from Massachusetts into Vermont and get off the highway at exit 3 for US-5/VT-9 E toward Brattleboro/Keene, NH. Continue onto Chesterfield Road and at the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit to stay on Chesterfield Road. Go 1,000 feet and continue onto NH-9 E. Go another 1,000 feet and you’ll be in New Hampshire, where you’ll make a right onto Gulf Road. Take Gulf Road for 2 miles to its intersection with Egypt Road. The trailhead parking area is on your right.

Hike Directions: Walk to the back of the parking lot toward a pond, and follow the trail around a dam and straight uphill a tenth of a mile to some beautiful stone step ruins.  This was once part of Madame Sherri’s mansion. Continue uphill along a stream to Indian Pond, arriving there 1.5 miles beyond the trailhead parking area.  Continue on the footpath as it winds a quarter of the way around the lake, then continues to ascend the mountain, on the lake’s western edges.  Continue a mile to a communications tower and turn RIGHT continuing down a wide path to an overlook on your LEFT, the summit of Wantastiquet.

Scenery: 8/10
