Hiker’s Checklist: What to Bring

Day Hiker’s Checklists

  1. Backpack (comfortable & study) or Lumbar Pack (for shorter hikes)
  2. Map & Compass
  3. Water (at least 2L) +  Water Filter
  4. Headlamp
  5. Camera
  6. GPS – optional
  7. Altimeter
  8. Cellphone – don’t expect great service, but it may help in an emergency
  9. First Aid Kit
  10. Pen & Small Notebook
  11. Weatherproof Jacket
  12. Gaiters
  13. Lip Balm
  14. Sunblock
  15. Sunglasses
  16. Lavender Essential Oil or Bugspray
  17. Bug net or Jacket
  18. Snack (GORP, etc.)
  19. Hat, Gloves, Gaiters (weather-dependent)
  20. Bathing Suit (weather-dependent)
  21. Extra Socks
  22. Extra shirt (preferably made from a breathable, non-cotton fabric)
  23. Whistle
  24. Pocket knife
  25. 20′ of Rope

Backpacker’s Checklist (in addition to the aforementioned items on the Day Hike Checklist…)

  1. Tent
  2. Tarp
  3. Duct Tape
  4. Sleeping Bag + Compression Sack
  5. Flashlight
  6. Extra Batteries
  7. Butane Lighter or Matches
  8. Dental Floss, Toilet Paper, etc.
  9. Garbage Bags
  10. Food for Lunch and/or Dinner + Spoon, Fork, Knife
  11. Zip Lock Bags
  12. Salt & Pepper
  13. Bear Canister – depending on location and park rules (e.g. in ADK High Peaks it’s required of anyone camping)
  14. Plastic containers for Food
  15. Stove
